[FR] App notes

Postby interfaSys » Sun Mar 02, 2014 5:21 pm

I would find it useful to be able to pin notes to apps

A customer may like the simplicity of the GUI to upgrade apps, but may need to do some custom work afterwards.
Being able to read notes would remind whoever is upgrading the app that there are some extra steps involved.

Hello,

I think we could add a feature that lets you add notes to the upgrade screen for specific apps, but I feel the correct solution here would be to fix the source the problem. Are there specific apps/versions you're having trouble with?

Thanks,
Phil

Hello Phil,

The problem is time...
Joomla's session manager is broken and thus needs to be patched after an update.
I just never took the time to learn how to inject patches via Installatron, so I have documentation in place, but if someone doesn't follow the how-to, he will miss that step.

A note would be a failsafe.

Hello,

It looks like the issue is caused due to Joomla forcing the use of the filesystem to save sessions? The session_handler should be set to 'database' for these cases. Which version gap is this affecting?

Thank you,
Phil

Hello,

Exactly and it's only a problem if the back-end you want to use is not in the list of supported back-end, but the default should be "Use the default PHP handler", no "Use files".

We use Redis which is not supported and this affects 3.2 for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised is all versions are affected.

Hello,

This got me thinking. If you're looking for new features to implement, a patch manager would be great or maybe simply use a patch folder within the user's allowed path.

Once patches are made available to an app, the update process would go:
  1. Backup
  2. Update app
  3. Test patch(es)
  4. If OK, patch
  5. If fail, then restore backup

Olivier,

That sounds kind of like an extension of the upgrade system. We'll take that into consideration and see how it would fit into future plans.

I think the notes are something we can incorporate sooner. I'll have another update on this next week.

Thanks,
Phil
