Unusual emails about updates

Postby darryl » Thu Mar 15, 2012 5:49 am

Hi,

Over the past few days we've had some support tickets regarding these emails, both of which were from reseller clients. Apparently they have just started coming in which they had not received previously, they do not have the following software installed so it seems like they are receiving general update emails which isn't correct.

I'm not sure if something has changed but it would be good if this could be investigated, we've never received tickets about this in the last few years of using Installatron so it seems to be new behaviour. These clients are on seperate servers so it seems to be a widespread behaviour caused by a recent update, both servers are running 7.0.15.

Here are some examples of emails received:

Just to let you know we've just had a 3rd report from another reseller about this, so I'm fairly confident it only affects reseller accounts as no reports from standard clients:

I thought I'd just check our mail log for one server and I can see rather a vast number of these have been sent out:

Here's a workaround fix we have put in place for the moment which has stopped the majority of these.

If you go to the root WHM account and Installatron, then to the Email section in this uncheck the top box in the administrator notifications section "Send Installatron Updater reports to the administrator (recommended)"

This seems to have stopped these being sent, I think any reseller that has customised their email settings from default will still receive these as we allow resellers to override the master settings, but for any who haven't (which seems to be the vast majority) it will solve the issue.

Hello,

These notifications are intended to be received by resellers. There was a long-standing bug in versions prior to 7.0.15 that prevented the notifications from being sent. It's listed as a fix here:
http://installatron.com/updatefeed/inst ... gin_7_0_15

If a reseller does not want to receive update notifications, the reseller can disable the notification option at Installatron Admin >> Settings >> Email.

To disable this option server-wide, unchecking the option on the admin level works.

Thank you,
Phil.

Phil,

Ah right, it did occur that this may have been a bug fix after posting, thanks for clarifying!

We've received complaints about this too. In fact one reseller marked the message as spam and we got a feedback loop report from Hotmail. This change is confusing Resellers.

You can't expect Resellers to know that they need to turn these alerts off. We also cannot login to every reseller account on all of our servers to turn it off for Resellers. This would take hours if not days.

This would also disable it for root.

We still want to receive these messages as root but want to disable them for all Resellers on all of our servers. How do we accomplish this without having to login to every reseller's account and go to Installatron Admin >> Settings >> Email ?

Hello,

A script has been prepared to forcibly disable the email for each reseller. This script will need to be executed as root from the server's SSH prompt.

Code: Select all
<?php

umask(0077);

foreach ( scandir("/var/installatron/data") as $i )
{
   if ( $i === "." || $i === ".." )
   {
      continue;
   }

   $user = json_decode(file_get_contents("/var/installatron/data/$i/info"),true);

   if ( !is_array($user) || $user["type"] !== "reseller" )
   {
      continue;
   }

   if ( file_exists($user["path_data"].".settings") )
   {
      $settings = unserialize(file_get_contents($user["path_data"].".settings"));
   }
   else
   {
      $settings = array();
   }

   echo "Updating reseller $i: email_admin: off\n";

   $settings["email_admin"] = "0";

   file_put_contents($user["path_data"].".settings", serialize($settings), LOCK_EX);
   chown($user["path_data"].".settings", fileowner($user["path_data"]) );
   chgrp($user["path_data"].".settings", filegroup($user["path_data"]) );

}

If there are any questions let us know.

Thank you,
Phil.
