Installing Wordpress to an existing HTML site?

Post by prodos » Tue Aug 24, 2010 9:47 pm

Good afternoon.

I host a friend's website on my VPS.

His site is a simple HTML site with several thousand articles.

I'd like to use my new and groovy Installatron system to install Wordpress to his site.

Would doing so wipe out the existing HTML pages?

If that is a possible danger, is there a way to avoid it?

Thanks for any advice and suggestions.

Howdy.

I tested the procedure on one of my spare domain names.

Copied the pages of a large HTML site to the test domain.

Installed Wordpress using Installatron.

No pages or folders were lost.

All the html pages remained as accessible as before the installation.

There was now the original /index.html page and the newly created /index.php Wordpress page.
And of course there were all the newly created WP directories.

I temporarily renamed /index.php as /index2.php so that the non-WP HTML front page was viewable.

Meanwhile I logged in via TestDomain.com/wp-admin and configured things - theme, plugins, widgets.

Conclusion: There seems to be no problem in installing Wordpress on top of an existing HTML site using Installatron.

I then went ahead and Installatroned WP to the "real" site. Everything seems to have turned out well.

Yes, I'm SH :shock:CKED!

Hello,

Yes, Installatron is able to install apps to domains with existing websites. Glad to hear everything worked out!

Cheers,
Phil.

I installed WordPress in a subdirectory on the same site where I had a static HTML-based web site. Then, when I was ready to "go live", I followed this documentation:

Hi,
Thank you very much Prodos for the nice tip. Copying the whole HTML code into page saves the effort spent in designing a custom WP theme from scratch.

I am having problem .html extension. could you please help? After removing the old static files from the root, i am getting 404 not found error !!

If I deactivate the plugin and change permalink to /%postname%/ , then it works fine !!
